Female mountain bikers wanted for research

by Robyn Bond, 27 Oct 06.

The research team at the BASES accredited lab at Roehampton University are conducting a high-level study into competitive women mountain bikers, and are recruiting subjects to work with from November 2006 until April 2007. Subjects should be female, have ridden mountain bikes for at least 3 years, be familiar with competing in races and be participating in the first two Gorrick XC series races on 28th January and 18th February.

The areas we will be focusing on include:

  • Female mountain bike performance
  • Female performance nutrition
  • Female strength and conditioning
  • Female endurance

Riders will be able to benefit from work in all the above areas, and will get:

  • Full physiological support at the BASES accredited laboratory
  • VO2 max testing
  • Maximum power output testing
  • Ventilatory and lactate threshold testing
  • Economy and efficiency maximisation
  • Body fat analysis
  • Nutritional advice
  • Hydration strategy
  • Blood status testing
  • Strengthening and conditioning assessment

In return you will be expected to attend Roehampton University for lab based testing on three separate occasions (dates will be confirmed when you email me).

This programme is attracting national media interest, and will form the basis for the most comprehensive study available in a field that has been widely neglected in terms of performance results. To make the study as effective as possible, the maximum number of participants is sought, so feel free to forward this information on to friends and colleagues who may be interested. (At present, it is likely that we will only be able to perform testing on those who are 18 or over.)

If you have any specific questions about the nature of the programme, or are interested in participating please drop me an email Robyn Bond: mtnbikeresearch@criticalbyte.co.uk
