Almost 600 riders challenged themselves to the delights of Swinley's best trails and I know many of you weren't disappointed. From the short bermed downhill course off Surrey Hill, to the roots and tight twists of Seagull Wood, and the orange ribbon of singletrack accelerating you through the turns on the Full Nine Yards, this course had it all packed into 10 miles, thankfully without too many of the fabled killer climbs. And weren't we lucky with the weather? Many Londoners had left town in torrential rain but the light spits and spots we got were barely noticeable.

On your sojourn around the forest you'll have noticed a considerable amount of work has gone into rebuilding the trails especially where they suffer in the wetter areas. All the hard work is down to the volunteers from Berks On Bikes and we thank them for the many hours of back breaking effort.

So who won what? In the seven lapper Rob English (AW Cycles) achieved his goal of blowing away all the opposition to complete in just 5 hours 33 minutes, followed by determined previous winner Jamie Newall (Evans Cycles) five minutes later. Jenn Hopkins (Minx/Kona) singlespeeded to victory in 7 hours 14 minutes to finish first lady. Luke Webber will have the full race round-up for us soon.

The other winners on the day were the lucky few in the Sagem prize draw for some great high tech products:

56" TV: Michael Scott (#133)
Set Top Box: Derek Wile (#510)
Set Top Box: Simon Acton (#599)
Set Top Box: Nik Pullen (#687)
Camera/Video Phone: Ryan Keynes (#289)
Camera Phone: Derek Butler (#46)

So on behalf of the Gorrick team we hope you a had a good day and achieved what you set out to do. If you want to ride regularly in Swinley Forest an annual Permit is required, please refer to the Swinley section of the website for an application form. Don't forget the fifth and final round of the Spring Series is due on the 21 May at Porridgepot Hill, Deepcut (our most popular venue). Before then if you're up for a navigational challenge we have a TrailTrax at Cheriton near Winchester on the 14 May. The Flower Pots Inn is a superb base with it's own micro-brewery and it provides good access to excellent trails in and around the South Downs. Expect a big turnout at everyones favourite venue.

How was it for you?

John Jones (4 laps): This was my first ever mtb race, in fact I last raced 41 years ago in a 100 mile Time Trial and this was far harder. But it was fantastic fun on a brilliant course. Oh by the way I'm now 66 years old!

Jenn Hopkins (7 laps, 1st Lady): That was fun! Really really really fun! Nice course too. I'm tired.

Jay McStay (5 laps): Some banging trance tunes on my IPOD kept me sane and motivated. The trails were sweet and thankfully there were fewer of the real killer climbs this year. It was good to see so many more novices having a go.

Paul Davies (5 laps, 2nd): It hurt.... a lot!!

Jason Robinson (5 laps) and James Wells (3 laps): We thought there was a lovely atmosphere in the arena and on course with mostly everyone employing courteous overtaking. Even our wives and girlfriends enjoyed watching and cheering all day. The double drop-off with the sharp right turn afterwards on the loose sand was an eye opener, we were looking forward to going straight on to hit another jump!
